Project Manager Rachel Wilkins talked about her approach to engagement which led to the ‘Attention on prevention’ report. Transparency ― we are accountable to the public, our Board and our commissioners. Integrity ― everything we do is for the benefit of the public. Inclusivity ― we make sure all community voices are heard, particularly the seldom heard. Independence ― we are an independent organisation, trusted to represent service users and the public. Overarching principles in our engagement work include: Healthwatch Associate Lyndsay Yarde explained the principles and approaches that Healthwatch Newcastle and Healthwatch Gateshead use to engage with the public. Ninety delegates, including members of the public and representatives from the voluntary and community (VCS) and statutory sectors, joined us to explore innovative ways to make sure all communities are heard. The second joint conference between Healthwatch Newcastle and Healthwatch Gateshead took place in April 2018. We will announce the priorities for Newcastle here once they are agreed. Once the results have been collated they will be reviewed by the Healthwatch Newcastle Committee. We also ask members of the public to help us choose our priorities. Priorities are drawn from a shortlist based on what people have told us and what is happening locally, regionally and nationally. Choosing our priorities for 2019–20Īt every annual conference we ask delegates to help choose our work priorities for the coming year. These will be shared with commissioners and service providers to ensure both individuals and communities get the services they need. The aim of the sessions was to produce a set of ten ‘top tips’ on listening to people. Carole also talked about dealing with the effects of her disease and its impact on other people, and not wanting to hide her baldness. Discussions then took place on what service commissions and providers do well and what they don’t do so well, in terms of listening to people and communities.Ĭarole Scott spoke passionately about her experience of being treated for cancer. To kick off the second session, a person at each table spoke about their own personal experience of health or social care services. Following round table discussions, people were asked to make suggestions on how Brian’s experience could be improved. Delegates were then asked to shout out one word which summed up Brian’s treatment. The conference kicked off with a performance by Lawnmowers Theatre (a group run by people with learning disabilities) who showed ‘Brian’s’ journey through a healthcare appointment. Members of the public and representatives from the voluntary and community (VCS) and statutory sectors joined us to explore the theme of being listened to/not listened to. This joint conference between Healthwatch Newcastle and Healthwatch Gateshead took place in April 2019. If the award scheme proves to have been successful, we will consider how it can be made available to all local GP practices and their PPGs. The intention is that by the end of the pilot all the practices and PPGs involved in the pilot will have met the award criteria.Īn evaluation will be carried out at the end of the project. During this time we will work with the GP practices and their PPGs and support them to become more effective. We now have around 12 practices involved in the pilot that will run from autumn 2019 to spring/summer 2020.

Roy’s enthusiastic and informative presentation was an inspiration to all us as we start this new project. There was also the opportunity to hear about the Teams Medical Practice Health and Wellbeing Action Group, a highly effective local patient participation group (PPG). Over 20 patient participation group members and GP practice staff from both Gateshead and Newcastle attended the launch event, which was held at Saltwell Towers.Īt the launch, participants found out more about the award and about our Healthwatch work more generally. The pilot of our ‘Healthwatch Participation in Practice’ award, a best practice award for patient participation groups, was launched in partnership with Healthwatch Gateshead on 25 September 2019.
